This has been a tough year for those living in poverty and experiencing homelessness in our community. Although some help has been sent from the federal level, it is simply not enough to keep many people from slipping over the brink into homelessness. With double digit unemployment, resources stretched paper thin, increased violence in poor neighborhoods and being number one in foreclosures nationally, Miami has been particularly hard hit. To make matters even worse families are the fastest growing population to experience homelessness during these unstable economic times.
The Coalition continues to work on systemic solutions at the federal, state and local level such as increased collaboration, advocating for more funding and affordable housing and protecting the rights of those living in poverty in our community. We are committed to the fight for solutions in what appears to be a protracted time of poverty and hardship.
This year, it is more important than ever for us to send an urgent call out to the community to join us in brainstorming creative solutions to end poverty and homelessness; while at the same time protecting the rights of those teetering on the edge of homelessness, and those who are now experiencing homelessness. Serendipity would have it that during this time of crisis we will have the opportunity to elect new leadership locally and at the state level. The Coalition encourages our constituents to take a close look at those vying for leadership roles, and to evaluate if anywhere in their key platform there is a strategy to help those most vulnerable in our community. The Coalition is in the struggle for the long term. We encourage you to join us.
